Public Service Electric and Gas Company

The Susquehanna-Roseland Electric Reliability Project is a 500,000 volt 145-mile transmission line passing through 16 municipalities from the PP&L Susquehanna Nuclear Plant in Pennsylvania to PSE&G’s substation in Roseland, New Jersey.   PSE&G built the New Jersey portion of the line, while PPL Electric Utilities, based in Allentown, PA, built the Pennsylvania portion. The power line and switching station project was necessary to ensure reliable electric service for the region. This project maintained reliability of the grid and enable PSE&G to continue to meet the increasing demand for safe, reliable electric service.

The New Jersey portion of the line is 45 miles and passes through 16 municipalities, beginning in Hardwick, Warren County, proceeding east to Roseland, Essex County. Each switching station along the line was upgraded to more efficient Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) to modernize the system and reduce the area needed for the switching equipment. Each line will replace existing air insulated connections to transformers and bus work with Gas Insulated Bus (GIB) or solid dielectric cables. The majority of the newly installed Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is housed in new 50’ high precast concrete Mission Critical GIS buildings with integral 20’ high control rooms. The company serves on the project team as the architect and engineer for the GIS buildings and control rooms for each site. To date our firm has completed (11) GIS and control room buildings (Branchburg 21,600 SF, Bayonne 10,800 SF, Hopatcong 15,750 SF, Roseland 230 14,600 SF, Roseland 500 15,050 SF, Saddlebrook 4037 SF, Mount Holly 4,244 SF, New Milford 22,570 SF, Newark 10,860 SF, Athenia 1,695 SF, and Hillsdale 20,020 SF).
